Explore The Journey

Our association with the Sundarbans began through a tourism development assignment involving one of the world's largest river deltas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Repeated visits exposed us to the region's unique ecological challenges, rich biodiversity and remarkable community resilience. These experiences laid the foundation for our long-term interest in sustainability, livelihoods and community-centred development.

In 2017, GRINS was conceptualized around a simple but ambitious idea: that sustainable impact is best achieved when communities, markets and enterprise work together. Guided by the principles of People, Planet and Profit, we began exploring a hybrid approach that combined nonprofit objectives with market-led interventions.
Our first major intervention was with Harimitti, an early-stage urban farming startup that connected rooftop farming in cities with livelihood opportunities for rural partners. The initiative explored how sustainable consumption and local entrepreneurship could create value for both urban consumers and rural communities.
In parallel, we committed ourselves to accelerating Badabon Harvest, a nascent stage farmer producer company in the Sundarbans. Starting from the ground up, the initiative sought to harness the growing demand for natural, green and organic food as an engine of development for small and marginal farmers. Operating within a conservation-focused framework, the effort aimed to strengthen livelihoods while encouraging sustainable agricultural practices and responsible market linkages in one of the world's most ecologically sensitive regions.
This phase reinforced our belief that environmental stewardship, community wellbeing and economic opportunity can be advanced together through thoughtfully designed value chains.

The Covid-19 pandemic and Cyclone Amphan brought unprecedented challenges to communities across the Sundarbans and beyond. During this period, our immediate efforts focused on supporting relief and rehabilitation through collaborative fundraising and partner-led interventions, while continuing to strengthen livelihood opportunities linked to Badabon Harvest and its farmer network.
As communities adapted to a rapidly changing environment, our work through individual members also expanded across multiple sectors and geographies. These included supporting the development of plant-based, preservative-free food products aimed at encouraging healthier and more sustainable consumption patterns, contributing to the strategic revival of a community-focused banking institution serving the Indian Railway community, and working alongside civil society partners engaged in animal welfare.
One of the most meaningful areas of engagement involved supporting efforts to address the growing challenges associated with stray and abandoned dogs through awareness, rescue, care and sterilization initiatives. Guided by the principles of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, these interventions sought not only to improve animal welfare but also to foster more harmonious coexistence between communities and street animals. The work spanned locations including NCR, Chandigarh Tricity and Kolkata, reflecting our growing engagement across diverse urban and metropolitan contexts.
The diversity of these experiences strengthened our understanding that sustainability extends beyond environmental concerns. It encompasses resilient institutions, responsible enterprise, community wellbeing and the ability to build bridges across social, economic and ecological divides.

As our work evolved, we increasingly reflected on a challenge faced by many community-led and nonprofit initiatives: dependence on unpredictable donations and short-term fundraising cycles. This led us to explore ways of creating more sustainable and self-generating support systems for social causes.
The period was devoted to research, learning and experimentation around alternative funding approaches that could connect everyday economic activity with social impact. This resulted in the launch of MForGood, an initiative designed to leverage routine mutual fund investments as a means of creating long-term support for causes that matter, without requiring additional financial commitments from investors.
In parallel, we launched Merch4Good, an e-commerce platform that enables individuals to support social causes through everyday purchases while also creating market access opportunities for independent artists, designers and creators. The platform seeks to transform consumption into a vehicle for community support, making giving more integrated into daily life.
Together, these initiatives reflect our continuing belief that sustainable impact is strengthened when communities, markets and purpose-driven action work in alignment. Rather than viewing philanthropy and enterprise as separate worlds, we continue to explore ways in which they can reinforce one another to create lasting social value.
-
As we look ahead, our focus remains on strengthening community-led initiatives that create lasting social and environmental value. While our areas of engagement continue to evolve, our relationships rarely end with the conclusion of a project. We remain connected with many of the individuals, communities, enterprises and partners that have been part of our journey since 2018, continuing to share learning, support and opportunities wherever possible.
Alongside these ongoing relationships, our current focus includes animal welfare, sustainable giving models and efforts to address loneliness and social isolation among older adults. Through partnerships, community engagement and innovative support mechanisms, we seek to foster wellbeing, strengthen meaningful connections and create sustainable pathways for impact.
We also continue to support community-led initiatives across Bharat by helping connect communities, markets and opportunities for long-term growth.
